South O’Brien shot a total of 398 over 18 holes at The Ridge Golf Course in Sioux Center. That was the result May 11 as the boys gathered for the War Eagle Conference Tourney. That score placed the Wolverines eighth. The tourney winner was Harris-Lake Park. The Wolves’ score of 330 was two strokes lower than the 332 posted by Unity Christian.
“It was a little chilly but the sun was shining all day today,” said South O’Brien head coach Heath Reichle. “It was a lot of fun and the guys played pretty well. We shot better than our yearly average on a very tough course. This was our first 18-hole meet of the year we did a pretty good job keeping up the pace and playing well. Josh Johannsen just missed a medal with a 95, Jason Wittrock had a 97, and Kaedon Louscher a 98. There are a lot of great players in the WEC this year and unfortunately, we didn’t have anyone earn a medal today. The guys are playing their best golf at the right time though and I’m excited to see how we do for our sectional meet at Sanborn on Friday.”
A War Eagle Conference dual that was unable to be played April 20 was made up at the WEC Tourney. This was done by using the scores from the first nine holes. The result was that Unity Christian defeated the Wolverines 162-197. The Knights occupied all four of the medalist spots. Johannsen fired South O’Brien’s low round of 45. The Wolverines concluded the conference duals season with a record of 2-8.
The points earned by the golfers during the season were the basis of awarding all-conference honors. Golfers 1-10 in the standings received first team status while golfers 11-20 made the second team. Just below that level were Johannsen, who finished 22nd, and Louscher, who was 26th.
