HMS shots drop in second half as Wolverine girls fall


South O’Brien enjoyed a 12-point halftime lead over Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn but the Hawk shooters came out hot after intermission. HMS won the second half by 20 points and claimed a 46-38 victory over the Wolverines January 16 at Paullina.
Five of the visitors’ seven three-point baskets came after halftime but the Hawks also got busier on the offensive boards. HMS finished with 26 offensive rebounds, allowing for second-chance points.
Marissa Ebel led the Wolverines with 15 points. Reese Farquhar finished with nine points, Addison Hedberg and Lindsey Einck with five apiece and Abby Nelson and Jaylah Jackson with two each. Chloe Hustedt assisted on two baskets.
Each team shot in the low twenties from the floor. South O’Brien was 12-of-57 for 21 percent. The Hawks got 14 more attempts at the basket, going 17-for-71 to shoot 24 percent. The Wolverines hit three treys and were 11-of-19 from the free throw line. HMS sank five of its eight free throw tosses.
Farquhar pulled down 14 rebounds and Ebel grabbed six. Coming away with two steals apiece were Hedberg, Einck, Hustedt, Farquhar and Nelson. Ebel blocked a pair of shots. South O’Brien turned the ball over 24 times while the Hawks committed 16 turnovers.
