South O’Brien FFA Test Plot Yields Promising Results

by Caden Wittrock • South O’Brien FFA Chapter Reporter
The South O’Brien FFA test plot, over the years, has emerged as a venture for FFA members to explore managing a production agriculture enterprise. Plot managers this year included Caden Wittrock, Nate Rohlfsen, Reese Lundquist, Austin Negus, Alex Griebel, Billy Lange, Ryan Fuller, Logan Dau, and Makenna Wallin.
The experimental plot is located on the outskirts of Paullina, and this year was planted to corn and soybeans. Seed was donated by many local seed dealers. XtendFlex genetics for soybean seed was chosen, along with a variety of traits in the corn plot. The plot was planted on May 22nd using Wittrock’s six-row planter.
FFA plot managers aimed to ensure optimal nutrient levels and sustained productivity. The liquid manure applications were taken care of by Ryan Tewes in the spring and Derek Griebel this fall.
Throughout the growing season, plot managers embraced integrated pest and weed management techniques. Pest and weed management was also taken care of by Wittrock’s. As the harvest season arrived, the FFA test plot stood as a testament to the success of their approach.
Yield analyses revealed not only impressive quantities but also high-quality crops ready for market due to some timely rains. The use of harvesting and fall tillage equipment was donated by Chad Dau, Bryan Rohlfsen, and Tony Lundquist. Bunkers Feed & Supply in Paullina is providing storage for the crops this year and the chapter test plot managers will be keeping an eye on market information to decide when to sell.
As the sun sets on 2023, the FFA test plot stands as an excellent experiential learning opportunity for chapter members. The group is pleased that their planning and execution of planting and harvesting procedures helped to maximize productivity. The lessons learned from this endeavor will undoubtedly influence future career and personal development growth through: Problem-solving and leadership skills, teamwork and collaboration, time management, networking, and goal setting.
