South O’Brien FFA Competes in State Horse Judging Competition

On June 13, 2023, the State FFA Horse Judging competition was held at the Equestrian Center at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids.
FFA members who participated in the competition gained new insights into equine science by evaluating and ranking horses based on breed characteristics, conformation, and performance. Participants also defended their placings through oral reasons in front of a panel of judges.
South O’Brien’s team was loaded with members new to the event, which means there is a lot of potential for this group. The team included Aubree Bruns, Hailie Wallinga, Alyssa Harper, and Josie Brown.
South O’Brien FFA Advisor, Eric Kumm noted that “The competition was actually very close. These young ladies really did a nice job not having experienced this level of competition before in this event. For our team to get into the top 10 next year is very well within our reach with a little more practice. We only need just 4-5 points per team member in each of the categories and they’re there.”
The team finished 26th overall on the state level and earned a Bronze rating. Since this was the first year for many of the team members, they all learned a lot from the competition and working with Mr. Kumm in the classroom. Josie said, “When you are doing the actual judging, make sure you write down every detail, even if you think it may not be important. Also, try not to be too nervous about giving reasons. It’s hard at first but will help you in the long run.” Josie recommends other members try competitions that may be out of their comfort zone and get involved because all the experiences in FFA are worth it.
