Youth Wrestles At Summer Iowa Games
A area youth will wrestle in the Summer Iowa Games in Ames on Saturday, July 15. Zachary Rohwer from Paullina will be heading down to compete at the State summer games. Zachary is the son of Nate and Vanessa Rohwer. Grandparent’s are Karen and Phil Reusch of Cherokee and Susan and Ben Rohwer of Paullina. Zachary goes to South O’Brien School and wrestles for the South O’Brien Wolverine Youth Wrestling Club. Zachary wrestled in the 51-53 lb weight class at the Lied Recreation Athletic Center Iowa State Campus, Ames. His first match he wrestled Mateo Arredondo from Des Moines won by Dec 11-7. Second round Rohwer lost to Savannah Halsted from Altoona by fall 2:31. Third Round Rohwer got into a tight cradled lost by fall 0:30 to Noah Sorensen of Ankeny.
Zachary said the experience of wrestling in the Iowa Games was a lot of fun and hard work. He wants to thank all his coaches Bryce Kelleher, Josh Logan and also Luke Jenness for working with him. He enjoyed traveling to Ames with his mother Vanessa Rohwer, Grandmother Karen Reusch and big bother Grayson. He said it was fun putting his pin in the Iowa Map showing where he is from.
The mission of the Iowa Games is to provide sports and recreation opportunities for all Iowans through Olympic-style festivals, events and programs.
The Summer Iowa Games, which take place annually during July in Ames. Over 60 sports are offered during the Summer Games. Special events are a large part of the Summer Iowa Games environment. Included in the Summer Games is the Opening Ceremony, Athlete Jamboree.
The Iowa Games began in August of 1987 as a weekend event, featuring 16 sports and 7,104 participants (nearly a record number at that time for a first-year state games). For the first time, weekend athletes, school children and senior citizens could experience the thrill of great performances and satisfaction of doing their best in a statewide Olympic-style competition.
