Wolverines lose both ends of doubleheader to Hawks
South O’Brien hosted Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn for a varsity doubleheader June 26 at Paullina. In the first game, which was rained out May 30 at Hartley, the Wolverines struck out 17 times in losing 8-1 loss. The second game saw HMS score two runs in the top of the seventh to capture a 6-4 victory.
HMS 8, South O’Brien 1
The Wolverines were the visitors in the opening game which counted in the War Eagle Conference standings. Jacob Cates went the distance for HMS, allowing only two hits: one to Damian Villarreal and the other to Boston Riedemann. South O’Brien finishes with a 1-9 record in the conference.
It was Riedemann who scored the lone Wolverine run. He led off the game by being hit by a pitch. He stole both second and third and a throwing error by the catcher allowed him to scamper home. South O’Brien left seven runners on base compared to just three for the Hawks.
Trevor Fiddelke was the starting and losing pitcher. He yielded the eight runs on seven hits. Half of the runs were earned. In his five innings of work Fiddelke recorded two strikeouts, two walks and one hit batter. There were four Wolverine errors. Gabe Moermond pitched the sixth inning and struck out the side.

The Wolverines tallied three times in the fourth inning to tie the game at 4-4 before visiting HMS scored the deciding runs in the seventh. The Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. South O’Brien answered with a run in the second. Mitchell Enger was hit by a pitch and Fiddelke drew a walk. Gabe Moermond singled to load the bases. A base hit by Villarreal knocked in Enger.
HMS expanded its lead to 4-1 with a pair of third-inning runs. The Wolverines’ three-run fourth began with a walk to Gabe Moermond. Brady Riedemann singled and Camden Stevens drew a walk to fill the bags. Boston Riedemann coaxed a walk to force in Gabe and then Dain Moermond followed with a double. Brady Riedemann and Stevens both scored to knot the game. There were missed chances by both teams as South O’Brien stranded nine runners and the Hawks left eight on base.
Ben Woodall took the loss in relief. In his 4-1/3 innings he allowed five hits and just the two late runs, one of which was earned. He struck out four batters, walked one and hit one. Starting pitcher Gabe Moermond worked 2-2/3 innings giving up four runs (two earned) on four hits. He notched five strikeouts but walked three batters and hit one. The Wolverines committed another four errors in this contest.
