South O’Brien ended up with a pair of losses June 10 as it hosted the Wolverine Softball Tournament. The Wolverines lost 6-1 to Ridge View and 7-5 to HMS. In the other games, Sioux Central defeated Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn 15-0 and then went on to win the championship game 7-4 over the Raptors.
Ridge View 6, South O’Brien 1
The Ridgeview Raptors have a very nice ball club and played an error free game in the field. The Wolverines only committed two errors themselves, but just couldn’t push runs across the plate. We had five hits to Ridge View’s six hits, but the difference was that we walked seven batters and the Raptors only walked one. We have to cut down on giving opposing hitters the free base. Shay Hatting took the loss after throwing 3-2/3 innings of play. She allowed three hits, three runs, walked three and struck out three. Brooklyn Edwards pitched the last 1-2/3 innings, while giving up three hits, two runs, walking four and hitting one batter.
Payton Farquhar hit a couple singles while Karlee Warnke, Maddie Johnson and Reese Farquhar each had a base hit. Warnke scored a run and Johnson had an RBI. We hit a ton of easy grounders and with the field being wet from the rain they weren’t very tough plays for Ridge View to make.

HMS 7, South O’Brien 5
South O’Brien jumped out to a 5-0 lead after four innings of play and looked to be in command when the wheels fell off and HMS scored six unearned runs in the fifth inning. It was a combination of two hits, four walks and three errors in the fifth to let the Hawks jump in front 6-5. Gracie Knobloch hit a solo home run in the seventh for HMS to make the final score 7-5 HMS. This was a very frustrating loss. We just gave up the one big inning. We have to stay consistent for a full seven innings. We are making way fewer errors than we were at the beginning of the season, but we still have work to do.
On the offensive side of things we need to keep attacking at the plate to score as many runs as possible. We only mustered three hits in the game. Jinger Nieuwenhuis hit an RBI double and her courtesy runner Avery Halverson scored a run. Payton Farquhar had a single and scored once. Maddie Johnson hit a single and her pinch runner Kelsee Warnke scored. Shay Hatting and Brooklyn Edwards combined to give up only four hits, and seven runs (one earned) while walking five and striking out 10.
