Wolverine girls top HMS golfers in the wind and heat
The South O’Brien Wolverines and the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Hawks met in a War Eagle Conference girls golf battle on Thursday, April 13 at the Primghar Golf Course. The Wolverines took the decisive win 218-233.
The gusty winds and extreme heat challenged the golfers, but the top three golfers still brought in scores in the 40s to walk away with medals. South O’Brien senior Whitney Einck carded her best round of the season. Einck shot a 47, which tied Gracie Knobloch from HMS for 1st place. However, Einck took the 1st place medal after a handicap card playoff. Wolverine senior Sam Wilbur, just one stroke behind the leaders with a 48, took the 3rd place medal. Wolverine coach Kris Faust said, “Although Wilbur was disappointed in her scores on a couple of holes, she played incredibly well.” The 4th place medal went to Elise Haack from HMS with a 55. South O’Brien sophomore Addison Brueggeman shot a 60 for 6th place and freshman Lindsey Einck carded a 63 for 7th place. Freshman Chloe Hustedt rounded out the Wolverine cards with an 88. “The 40-50 mph winds and the 80-degree heat were certainly factors during the meet, but somehow the top golfers kept fairly focused and played some great golf,” commented Faust. “It was great to see Whitney hit the ball well and card her best round of the season to earn medalist honors.”
