Roos third, De Boer eighth for Sheldon/South O’Brien at State Wrestling Tourney
Jarrett Roos topped off a spectacular season by finishing third at the State Wrestling Tournament held February 15-18 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. A loss in the Class 2A semifinals at 182 pounds was the only blemish on a season that featured 44 wins. The Orab junior placed fourth in last year’s State Tourney.
Three other Sheldon/South O’Brien wrestlers also earned the trip to Des Moines.
Coy De Boer finished eighth at 152 pounds. The senior is a three-time State qualifier, missing out only in his junior year. This year he finally reached the podium, finishing with a record of 43-5.
This season marked the first State Tourney appearance for both junior Zach Brinkman, wrestling at 195 pounds, and for freshman heavyweight Jack Leng. Each saw his tournament end with a pair of losses on day one.
The second-seeded Roos received a bye into round two where he pinned Humboldt junior Gaige Allen. His quarterfinal match was also decided by fall with the victim being Zach Adelmund of Dike-New Hartford. Third-seeded Brody Sampson carried a 50-2 record into his semifinal encounter with Roos. The Ballard junior advanced to Saturday night’s championship match with a 3-2 decision over Roos. That moved the Sheldon/South O’Brien grappler into the consolation semis. There Roos met Jace Mulder of Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley. Roos had earlier claimed two sudden victory wins over the Nighthawk senior, who was unable to exact revenge at State as Roos scored a 3-1 victory. That put the Orab senior in the third-place match where he again pinned Dike-New Hartford’s Adelmund.
De Boer won his first round match 6-2 over Winterset’s Zeke Hoven. A loss by fall to Jase Goodell of Humboldt sent the Orab senior into the consolations. De Boer then ran off a three-match win streak, defeating Red Oak’s Adam Baier 7-5, scoring an 8-4 decision over Triston Miller of Columbus/WMU and pinning Knoxville’s Chaz Graves. The Sheldon/South O’Brien wrestler then ran into Goodell for a second time and again lost by fall. The seventh-place match pitted De Boer against Aiden Flora and the ADM junior won by fall.
Brinkman lost both of his matches by fall to finish the season with a 26-20 record. Leng suffered the same fate and closed out his first varsity campaign at 26-19.
The 22 team points earned by Roos and the eight scored by De Boer allowed Sheldon/South O’Brien to tie for 25th with 30 team points.
