A quartet of wrestlers from Sheldon/South O’Brien will be heading to Des Moines. The foursome punched their tickets to the big show with strong showings at the Class 2A District Wrestling Tournament held February 11 at Estherville. Wrestlers who finished either first or second at Districts advanced to the State Tournament which is being held February 15-18 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. The action in Class 2A begins Wednesday afternoon.
At the District Tourney, Orab Jarrett Roos finished first at 182 pounds. The junior will be making his third straight trip to Des Moines. Senior Coy De Boer took the top placing at 152 pounds. He qualified for State as a freshman and sophomore and just missed out last season. Experiencing State Tourney action for the first time will be junior Zach Brinkman and freshman Jack Leng. Both finished second at Districts, Brinkman at 195 and Leng at 285.
Josh Hoffman placed third at 103 pounds and did not have a chance to wrestle back for second. Finishing fourth were Cole Cox at 126 pounds, Anthony Escobar at 138 and Tyson Getting at 160.
Roos won both of his District matches by fall, pinning James Gellerman of Okoboji/HMS in 1:00 and Spirit Lake Park’s Gabe Poolman in 2:39. De Boer faced three opponents and recorded three pins. The first two victims were Cherokee’s Elisha Olson in 25 seconds and Warren Duitsman of Estherville Lincoln Central in 55 seconds. In the 1st Place Match, De Boer was close to a win by fall over Bryce Dodge but the Okoboji/HMS wrestler hung around till the end of the period. Trailing by a large margin, Dodge nearly got the pin himself. Eventually De Boer did prevail by pinning Dodge in 5:03.
Brinkman recorded a quarterfinal win by fall over Logan Sandman of Spirit Lake Park in 2:47. He then pinned his semifinal opponent, Algona’s Gavin Goche, in 4:45. In the 1st Place Match, Emmitt Fleshman of West Lyon got the win by fall over Brinkman in 54 seconds. After Goche captured the 3rd Place Match there was no need for a wrestleback.
On the other hand, a wrestleback proved crucial for Leng. The heavyweight was matched up against Forest City’s Caleb Cooper in the semifinal round and pinned him in 3:26. The 1st Place Match saw Leng lose by fall to Cohen Reffer of Algona in 2:29. When Estherville Lincoln Central’s Jess Christensen won the 3rd Place Match, he had a chance to challenge Leng for second. In a thrilling wrestleback match, it was Leng who prevailed by pinning Christensen in 4:30.
The 131 team points Sheldon/South O’Brien earned at the District Tourney placed them third among the eight squads. Algona finished first with 235 points and Estherville Lincoln Central was second with 138.5.
