Strong finish carries Akron-Westfield past Wolverine girls
Akron-Westfield pulled away in the fourth quarter to secure a 41-27 win over South O’Brien January 5 at Akron. The Wolverines trailed by just five points at the end of the third quarter but were outscored 15-6 in the final frame.
“Coming off of Christmas break I thought we did very well defensively,” commented South O’Brien head coach Erica Zimmer. “In the fourth quarter, we weren’t able to get as many shots up due to their press.”
South O’Brien out-shot the Westerners 30 percent to 24 percent but Akron-Westfield got 33 more shots at the basket. The Wolverines committed 37 turnovers compared to 17 for Akron-Westfield. The home team also collected 14 offensive rebounds.
South O’Brien had nine baskets in 30 attempts, going 5-for-13 from beyond the arc. The Westerners were 16-of-63 from the floor with their 34 three-point tries yielding just five baskets. From the foul line the Wolverines were 4-of-10 and Akron-Westfield 6-of-11.
Taja Conley was 5-of-8 from three-point range and finished with 15 points. Alyssa Van Beek scored five points. Takara Conley, Tatiana Conley and Samantha Wilbur each tallied two points and Marissa Ebel one. Ashlyn Gimer contributed two assists.
Van Beek captured 14 of the Wolverines’ 34 rebounds. Other contributors included Tatiana Conley with six boards, Taja Conley with five and Takara Conley with four. Taja Conley made four steals while Van Beek and Tatiana Conley each came away with three. Van Beek blocked two shots and Ebel one.
