Wolverines close HMS Tourney with a win
South O’Brien saved its best for last in competition at the HMS Volleyball Tournament held September 24 at Hartley. After a pair of losses the Wolverines capped the day with a 2-1 victory over Okoboji. The results put South O’Brien at 4-17 on the season.
The Wolverines drew Rock Valley as their first opponent of the day and the Rockets won 21-17 and 21-10. Tatiana Conley had four kills and Whitney Einck seven set assists. Johnson recorded two block assists while Einck notched five digs. Maddie Johnson finished 8-of-9 at the service line with three ace serves.
South O’Brien split two sets against Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn with the Wolverines winning the first 21-16 and HMS taking the second 21-17. The third and deciding set went the way of the Hawks in a big way, 15-5. Kills leaders were Conley with five and Marissa Ebel and Brooklyn Edwards with four apiece. Einck’s assist total was 13. Ebel made seven digs, Jinger Nieuwenhuis six and Johnson five. Karlee Warnke registered a solo block. Edwards was 6-for-6 serving with three aces.
The Wolverines held several slim leads in a first set won by Okoboji 21-16. South O’Brien led 8-4 in set two but fell behind 12-9. The Wolverines then scored six straight points on the way to a 21-14 victory. South O’Brien trailed 10-7 in the final set but rallied to take a 12-11 lead. Things remained close with the Wolverines eventually seizing the 15-13 victory to take the match 2-1. Ebel and Conley each supplied four kills with Einck providing 12 set assists. Edwards dug up 12 Pioneer attacks and Johnson contributed a solo block. South O’Brien served 52-of-56 as a team with 11 aces. Warnke was 14-of-14 and served four of those aces.
