Wolverines fall to Hinton in War Eagle opener
South O’Brien stepped into War Eagle Conference play for this season on August 30 with a trip to Hinton. This was also the conference opener for the Blackhawks and they did not disappoint the home crowd, winning 25-11, 25-12 and 25-9.
Hinton, ranked 11th in Class 2A, held the lead throughout the first set. The Wolverines got off to a better start in set two, establishing a 3-0 advantage. The Blackhawks responded, taking the lead for good at 6-5. In the third set, the score was tied 2-2. That was before Hinton reeled off eight straight points to take command.
South O’Brien head coach Cortney Roskamp knew Hinton was talented and would be a tough opponent. She said the Wolverines were able to take away some positives from the match. “The girls stayed competitive and determined throughout each set,” noted Roskamp. “I feel playing a match like that gives a chance to look at the areas we still need to plug away at and continue working on and we’ll learn and grow from here. Our defense will definitely be a main focus as we prepare to take on Gehlen Catholic.”
The Wolverines managed just nine kills. A third of them came from Tatiana Conley. Whitney Einck contributed seven set assists and Marissa Ebel finished 10-of-11 at the service line. Karlee Warnke was busy on the defensive side, making two blocks and digging up five Gehlen attacks.
