South O’Brien came into the July 1st Class 1A Region 1 first round game with a 2-0 record against Trinity Christian this year, but they knew it would not be an easy task to defeat the Tigers for the third time. South O’Brien led the entire game, but it ended up being a lot closer than they had hoped.
The Wolverines allowed two Trinity batters to get on base in the first inning before shortstop Abby Schreck caught a line drive and picked off the girl at third for the double play. South O’Brien started the game off well by putting two runs on the board in the first inning. Trinity got one run in the top of the second.
In the third the Wolverines scored two more times to go ahead 4-1 and then got four big runs in the fourth to take a commanding 8-1 lead. The highlight of the big fourth inning was a two-run home run by Jinger Nieuwenhuis. Trinity and South O’Brien each managed one run in the fifth inning to make the score 9-2. South O’Brien would not score again, but Trinity did it’s best to pull off an upset with three runs in the sixth and two runs in the seventh to make the final score 9-7.
Grace Fuhrman threw a very nice game on the mound going the distance for the win! She allowed seven hits, seven runs (two earned), walked none, struck out four and hit two batters. She got a lot of Tiger batters to pop out. On the offensive side Nieuwenhuis led all batters with a home run, two singles and two RBI’s along with a run and a run scored by her courtesy runner, Avery Halverson. Kenna Bauer ripped a double and a single, scored a run and had an RBI. Annika Jenness hit a pair of singles and had an RBI. Fuhrman hit an RBI single and her courtesy Marissa Ebel scored twice. Payton Farquhar scored three runs. This was an exciting post season win for us! The Wolverines were scheduled to travel to Remsen to take on Remsen St. Mary’s on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
