Host Alta-Aurelia ousts Wolverines from District baseball tourney
South O’Brien saw its baseball season come to an end as Alta-Aurelia beat the Wolverines 12-2 in six innings July 2 at Alta. With the opening round loss in the Class 1A District 3 baseball tournament, South O’Brien finishes with a record of 1-19.
The Warriors scored a run in the first. They sent nine men to the plate in the third inning, scoring five more runs against starting, and losing pitcher Dain Moermond. Trevor Fiddlke took over in relief and induced an inning-ending double play. On the play, shortstop Ben Woodall snagged a line drive and threw to second baseman Boston Riedemann to catch the Warrior runner off the base.
Alta-Aurelia built the lead to 8-0 with a two-run fourth that included a solo home run. The Wolverines scored their two runs in the top of the fifth. Ben Woodall batted his way on board to lead off the inning. Cole Tjossem and Boston Riedemann were each hit by pitches to load the bases. Kester Grimm hit a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Woodall. Riedemann was caught in a rundown which allowed Tjossem to score.
In the sixth inning, South O’Brien was unable to get the third out before the Warriors tallied four runs to end the game by the 10-run rule.
Grimm singled in the first inning and Pete Bottjen walked but a pair of strikeouts ended the threat. Fiddelke drew a walk in the second before being erased on a fielder’s choice. Bottjen reached on an error in the third inning but was caught stealing.
Moermond struck out four batters, walked five and hit one. Fiddelke allowed four walks and recorded one strikeout. Complete stats for the game were unavailable at press time.
This was the last game for South O’Brien seniors Bottjen, Grimm and Brock Riedemann.
