Runs come early in Gehlen’s baseball win over Wolverines
Gehlen Catholic put eight runs up on the scoreboard in the first two innings versus South O’Brien June 8 at Paullina. Each team scored three runs the rest of the way with the Jays pocketing the 11-3 War Eagle Conference win.
The visitors scored two runs in the first inning. They added six more in the second powered by a pair of two-run home runs. Brock Riedemann responded with a solo shot in the bottom of the second to get the Wolverines on the board.
Gehlen tallied once in the third. The home team answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. With two outs Boston Riedemann singled and went to third on Pete Bottjen’s base hit. South O’Brien then executed a double steal with Boston Riedemann scoring. A single by Dain Moermond drove in Bottjen with the second run of the inning.
Southn O’Brien totaled nine hits with Brock Riedemann and Moermond each going 2-for-4. Brock singled in the sixth inning and Dain in the seventh. Mitch Enger recorded a base hit in the fourth and Ben Woodall singled in the sixth. Cole Tjossem beat out a ground ball for an infield hit in the seventh.
Trevor Fiddelke went the distance on the mound, blanking the Jays in the final three innings. For the game he allowed 11 runs on 11 hits. Six of the runs were earned. Fiddelke struck out five. He issued no walks but did hit three batters. The Wolverines committed five errors behind him.
