After 1 ½ innings of play South O’Brien found themselves behind 4-0 in a May 24 home softball game against Trinity Christian. The Wolverines then got the bats going and scored one in the second, two in the third, five in the fourth, three in the fifth and five in the sixth. We were ripping the ball very hard with a lot of line drives that the Tigers could do nothing about.
Leading all hitters with a 5-for-5 performance, including four RBI’s and a double, was Maddie Johnson. She was just crushing everything! Abby Schreck ripped a triple and a single, collected two RBI’s, and had her courtesy runner, Abby Nelson, score twice. Karlee Warnke had a double and a single, and scored three times. Payton Farquhar hit a pair of singles, scored two times and had an RBI. Jinger Nieuwenhuis, Kenna Bauer, and Alyssa Van Beek all hit a base hit as well.
As flashy as our offense was, our defense was another story. The Wolverines committed 12 errors in the game. Yes, it was a cold, windy, rainy, miserable night, but a lot of these errors were routine pop flies. It was very frustrating to say the least. For the second night in a row, Grace Fuhrman had a very nice night on the mound. She struck out six, walked two, gave up three hits and six unearned runs. In the end the Wolverines 10-runned the Tigers 16-6, but have a lot to improve upon.
