City approves truck box/ snow plow purchase – The Paullina City Council, at its regular Monday night meeting, approved the purchase of a truck box, hoist and snow plow from Steffen of Sioux City. Doug Kovarna, representing Steffen, explained the different options available on the box and plow. After a lengthy discussion, the council approved the purchase of a 740 hoist and box at a total cost of $4,759. A new snow plow will also be purchased at a total cost of $9,778. Also the council approved trading in the old box and hoist at a trade-in value of $400. Some switching of boxes on present city equipment will be done at a cost of $681.
The City will advertise for a part time summer employee to assist in the utilities department. The person will do more physical labor than the other two summer employees hired. The new employee must be 18 years or older and will be paid anywhere from $4.65 – $5.75 per hour depending upon experience.
Zion to host German Heritage Dinner – Zion Lutheran Church of Paullina will host its’ Annual German Heritage Dinner on Sunday, March 22. The dinner will feature authentic German foods. Worship begins at 10:45 a.m. The service will include Luther’s German Mass. The meal will immediately follow the service. A free-will offering will be taken. The community is invited, Come join the celebration!
AMERICAN LEGION BIRTIIDAY PARTY – The American Legion is 73 years old and O’Brien County is having a banquet in it’s honor. The banquet will be held on Friday, March 20, 1992, at The American Legion Community Building in Paullina. The doors will open at 5:00 p.m. with the banquet starting promptly at 6:30 p.m. Members of The American Legion Auxiliary will be honored. Tickets will be $6.00 which includes admission to the dance following the banquet: Music will be furnished by the Melodiers. The dance is open to the public for a $3.00 admission charge.
40 years ago – 1982
Firemen Called to Lange’s – Saturday Paullina firemen were called to Lange’s Cafe on Saturday afternoon as a motor on the roof top overheated. The motor is used by the heating and air conditioning systems. Smoke came in the back room of Lange’s but there was no other damage.
Goodwill Bags Will Be Distributed on March 20 – The Paullina Cub Scouts will be distributing Goodwill bags on Saturday, March 20 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 12 noon. The Boy Scouts will pick up the filled bags on Saturday, March 27 Please put the filled bags where the boys can see them from the street.
Area 4 Spelling Bee is March 20 – The Area 4 Spelling Bee will be held on March 20 1982 at 9 30 a m in the Sheldon High School Auditorium The Bee is being sponsored by Area Education Agency 4 Educational Services Division in conjunction with the Des Moines Register and Tribune The names of the three finalists and the fourth and fifth plaic alternates from Area 4 will be sent to the Des Moines Register for placement in the Iowa State Spelling Bee In the event that one of the three finalists cannot attend the State Bee the fourth runner-up will be requested to take his/her place.

Zion Students To Give Operetta Mar. 28 – The students of Zion Lutheran school will present “Make Believe Magic”, an operetta depicting children-who wish they lived in pioneer days so they wouldn’t have to work so hard. The public is invited to attend the evening of March 28th at 8:00 p.m.
Historical Society Meets Tuesday, March 21 – The O’Brien County Historical Society will meet the evening of March 21st in the Court House at Primghar. We will have the pleasure of hearing from Dr. H.B. Donovan of Jefferson. There will be a time of visiting over coffee and cookies following the meeting.
