Strong third quarter cements Akron-Westfield’s win over Wolverine girls

Akron-Westfield outscored South O’Brien by 14 points in the third quarter and went on to top the Wolverines 64-42. The non-conference game was played November 30 at Paullina. The Westerners held a 29-22 lead at halftime and then moved out to a 37-24 advantage. They scored 11 of the final 13 points in the third to go up 52-31 heading into the fourth.
Abby Schreck hit a pair of three-point baskets and finished with 12 points. Kenna Bauer scored 10 points, Riley Draper seven, Alyssa Van Beek six and Willa Sickelka three. Adding two points apiece were Takara Conley and Samantha Wilbur. Draper dished for four assists and Schreck three.
The Wolverines were the more accurate shooting team (44 percent to 37 percent) but Akron-Westfield put up 71 shots compared to 36 for South O’Brien. The Westerners won the backboard battle 29-17 and came away with 24 steals.
From the floor the Wolverines were 16-of-36 and Akron-Westfield 26-of-71. Neither team made much hay from outside as the visitors made a pair of treys and the home team connected on three.
Sickelka grabbed six rebounds and made five steals. Van Beek hauled in five rebounds. Draper, Bauer and Conley each blocked a shot.
Natalie Nielsen produced 20 points and 15 rebounds for the winners. Makenzie Hughes nailed the team’s two long range shots on the way to a 15-point night.
