Wolverine boys shut down Akron-Westfield to win opener
South O’Brien got the boys basketball season underway by entertaining a 1-0 Akron-Westfield team. The Wolverines did not give the visitors a chance to build a winning streak, jumping on the Westerners early and going on to capture a 53-16 non-conference victory November 30 at Paullina. South O’Brien led 21-5 after one quarter and continued to clamp down on Akron-Westfield for the remainder of the game.
The Wolverines’ balanced scoring showed Jake Wallin with 16 points, Sawyer Honkomp with 12, Hudson Oolman with 11, Jacob VanLith with 10, and Pete Bottjen and David Bottjen with two apiece. Wallin, Honkomp and Oolman each contributed a pair of assists. Oolman came away with five steals and Wallin pulled down 11 rebounds.
South O’Brien was 22-of 45 from the field for 49 percent. The Wolverines went 3-of-9 from three-point range and were 6-of-13 at the free throw line.
