Johnson Hits Homer for the Win

By Coach Heather Struve
Maddie Johnson smashed a one-out, two-run walk off home run in the bottom of the seventh against Unity Christian on Thursday, June 17th to seal the 4-2 conference win for South O’Brien! The game had started well for South O’Brien as Hannah Dau started the first inning with a leadoff single, stole second and third and scored on a passed ball to go ahead 1-0. Neither team scored again until Unity scored a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning off of a Wolverine error and a home run to go up 2-1.
The Wolverines came right back in the bottom of the sixth to knot the score at 2-2 when Abby Schreck singled and scored on a triple by Annika Jenness. The Wolverines got out of the top of the seventh on a great catch by Willa Sickelka at second base with Unity runners in scoring position. Then in the bottom of the seventh Grace Fuhrman singled to start the inning and was replaced by courtesy runner Karlee Warnke. Warnke stole second to get into scoring position, but it would not matter as Johnson belted the homer to center with one out.
Fuhrman got the win on the mound and went the distance. She allowed two runs (one ER), three hits, two walks, and struck out seven. She has been getting more consistent throughout the entire game as the season has gone on. Johnson had the two RBI home run. Dau and Fuhrman each hit a pair of base hits, Dau scored a run and Fuhrman’s courtesy runner scored a run. Jenness had the RBI triple. Schreck had a single and scored one run. This was another great conference win for South O’Brien!
