Wolverine bats are quiet as Gehlen Catholic advances 5-0 in District tourney

Pitching and defense kept South O’Brien in its tourney matchup with Gehlen Catholic. The Wolverine bats were unable to come through, however, as two Gehlen pitchers combined for a one-hitter in the Jays’ 5-0 win. The Class 1A District 2 opening round game was played July 5 at Akron. With the loss, South O’Brien concludes the season with a record of 5-17.
Because of heavy rains, the start of the game, scheduled for 5:00 p.m, was delayed over an hour. There was also a 30 minute lightning delay in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Alex Griebel took the mound in the first inning for the Wolverines. He pitched 4-1/3 innings, yielding four earned runs on seven hits. One of those hits was a two-run home run by Dylan Poeckes in the fifth inning. Griebel walked four batters and struck out one. Damian Villarreal came in from center field to toss the last 1-2/3 innings. He allowed one earned run on two hits while walking one batter and hitting one.
Brady Riedemann had three putouts playing at third base and in the outfield. Will Stout played both second and third, assisting on five outs. Neither team committed an error.
Austin Negus recorded to only hit for the Wolverines. Riedemann drew two walks. Negus and Ryan Fuller each walked once. South O’Brien left all four runners on base. The Jays stranded nine runners.
This marked the final game for senior Fuller.
