Wolverines get a split in doubleheader with HMS

South O’Brien played a doubleheader last week with Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn. The first game was suspended at Hartley due to the weather and resumed when the teams were scheduled to meet at Paullina. HMS won that War Eagle Conference game 14-7 but the Wolverines rebounded to take the nightcap 11-4.
“On June 2nd we played at Hartley and had a 6-0 lead after an inning and a half of play,” noted South O’Brien head coach Heather Struve. “We had all the momentum rolling and then a lightning storm hit and the game was suspended until June 30. We started with a 6-0 lead, but HMS burst out of the gate in their first at bat with six runs to erase the lead. Their hitting would continue, along with a few miscues by us to give them the 14-7 win. We just could not get the bats going at all. It was very disappointing after the way we had started this game almost a month ago. Abby Nelson was the bright spot on offense with a 3-for-4 performance, two RBI’s and two runs.” With the loss the Wolverines finished 4-6 in conference play.

South O’Brien got good pitching and timely hitting in rebounding to take the second contest. “This was almost a complete opposite game of the first one of the evening,” said Struve. “We started out hot with the bats, plating seven runs through the first three innings and going up 7-3. Tawni Wulf threw a heck of a game, striking out eight and walking five. She only allowed three hits over the full seven innings. She also came up big with her bat, going 3-for-4 and getting three RBI’s. Ashlynn Gunnerson and Alli Griebel were both 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI’s each.”
