Lightning denies Wolverines a chance to upset Hinton
by Scott Chrisman
South O’Brien was in position to steal a game from Hinton. The Wolverines didn’t get the opportunity and the War Eagle Conference co-leaders came away with the 6-4 conference win June 16 at Hinton.
“The score was tied 4-4 through five innings of play,” explained South O’Brien head coach Heather Struve. “In the bottom of the sixth with two outs, Sypersma from Hinton hit a bloop that fell in for a base hit to score two runs and then a bolt of lightning lit the sky and the game was suspended. We waited 1-1/2 hours and the umps finally called it a game. Within another half hour it was clear skies and we could have finished, but it was not to be. This was a very tough one to take with the top of our order coming up to bat in the seventh. Who knows what might have happened.”
The Wolverines scored all their runs in the first three innings. Said Struve, “We got off to a great start with Reese Farquhar hitting a single in the first and BreLee Rasmussen hitting in Farquhar’s courtesy runner, Kelsee Warnke after Warnke had stolen second. In the second inning Alli Griebel started the inning with a base hit and was replaced by her courtesy, Avery Halverson. Halverson scored on a double from Lindsey Einck. Griebel knocked in two more runs in the third to make the score 4-2. Number 12 Hinton pulled out the win, but this should be a confidence booster for our girls. We are playing with just about anyone.”
Starting pitcher Griebel worked 4-2/3 innings allowing four runs (one earned) on five hits with eight walks, two strikeouts and a hit batter. Tawni Wulf pitched what proved to be the final inning. She yielded two earned runs on three hits with two walks and a strikeout. The Wolverines were guilty of four errors.
Rasmussen and Griebel were each 2-for-3 at the plate. Farquhar, Einck and Wulf supplied the other hits.
