Remsen St. Mary’s has the answers against Wolverines

South O’Brien had three scoring innings in its War Eagle Conference contest with Remsen St. Mary’s. Each time the Hawks answered to come away with an 8-5 win June 6 at Remsen. With the loss the Wolverines dipped to 0-2 in the conference.
“After 3-1/2 innings of play we led 4-1, but could not hold on to the lead for long, as RSM came back to score 4 runs in the bottom of the fourth and take the 5-4 lead,” noted South O’Brien head coach Heather Struve. “We tied it 5-5 in the top of the fifth, but RSM once again scored three more in the bottom half of the inning and went up 8-5.” Even the Wolverines’ first-inning run was matched by the home team in the second.
South O’Brien was limited to five hits on the night. “We struggled a bit tonight on offense and I’m not quite sure why,” said Struve. “Abby Nelson was the bright spot with a bases-clearing double and a single.” Abby Woodall, Lindsey Einck and Maeci Stevens each recorded one hit.
Starting pitcher Alli Griebel walked six batters and allowed two hits in giving up five runs, three of which were earned. She also struck out a batter. Tawni Wulf pitched the final 2-2/3 innings, yielding three earned runs on four hits. She walked two batters. There were three South O’Brien errors. “Once again it wasn’t a real big zone and we struggled to throw strikes at times,” said the Wolverine coach. “Alli gets saddled with the loss. We need to put all three parts of the game together. We at least need to take the pressure off of our pitchers a bit by getting the offense going a bit earlier. This was one we could have won, so that makes it tough.”
