Royals pull away late in win over South O’Brien
MMCRU snapped a 3-3 tie with a run in the fifth inning and tacked on four more in the seventh to defeat South O’Brien 8-3 in their War Eagle Conference baseball opener May 30 at Paullina.
South O’Brien got on the scoreboard first with three runs in the second inning. The Royals answered with three of their own in the top of the third.
Brennan Billick went 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Austin Negus was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Damian Villarreal singled and drove in a run and Gabe Moermond hit a double. Eliot Boardman was hit by a pitch and scored. Billick and Villarreal each stole two bases in two attempts.
Starting pitcher Alex Griebel tossed five innings, allowing four runs (one earned) on five hits. He struck out three batters and walked one. Moermond struck out four in his two innings on the mound. None of the four runs he allowed were earned. Moermond gave up one hit, walked three batters and hit one.
