South O’Brien Uses Big Fifth Inning to Put Away Falcons

June 7th in Paullina the Wolverines looked to have a commanding 4-0 lead over West Sioux through four innings of play, but the Falcons scored three runs of their own in the top of the fifth to get within one run of the hosts. The Wolverines would then come roaring out of the bottom of the fifth with seven runs of their own to put the score at 11-3. A run by the Falcons in the sixth made the final score 11-4.
Going back to the first inning, Hannah Dau reached base on an error, was sac bunted to second by Willa Sickelka and scored on a double from Abby Schreck. Schreck then scored on a triple by Annika Jenness to go up 2-0. Neither team scored in the second or third innings of play. In the bottom of the fourth, the Wolverines plated two more runs when Jenness doubled, Kaylee Jacobs singled, and Maddie Johnson singled to bring in both runs. In the fifth West Sioux came up with three runs off of a Wolverine error, a hit and two walks. But in the bottom of the fifth inning, the hosts ripped off five hits and were aided by three hit batters. The big hits of the inning were a two-run triple by Kenna Bauer, a two-run double by Schreck and a two-run single by Johnson.
Grace Fuhrman pitched the first five innings and got credited with the win. She gave up five hits, three unearned runs, walked four and struck out two. Bauer threw the last two innings and gave up one hit, one earned run, walked one and struck out two.
Jenness lead all hitters going 3-for-4 on the night, including a triple, a double and a single, along with a run scored and an RBI. Schreck smoked two doubles, had three RBI’s and scored once. Johnson had a pair of singles, four RBI’s and scored a run. Bauer hit the triple, collected two RBI’s, and scored a run. Dau hit a base hit, scored two runs, and had an RBI. Jacobs also had a single and scored two runs.
