The South O’Brien boys track and field team qualified a half-dozen events for this week’s State Track and Field Meet. That was based on their results at the Class 1A State Qualifying Meet May 15 at Armstrong, hosted by North Union.
The Wolverines won four events to automatically qualify them for State. Placing first were the 4×100 relay and the sprint medley relay. The personnel for both of those relays are Damian Villarreal, Caden Wittrock, Brody Van Beek and Derek Paulsen. Van Beek and Paulsen were also part of the winning shuttle hurdle relay unit along with Brennan Billick and Brett Evans. In addition, Billick claimed first place in the 110 meter hurdles. Advancing to State based on their times at the Qualifying Meet were Trayton Cobb who finished third in the 400 meter dash and the runner-up 4×200 relay group of Evans, Wittrock, Van Beek and Paulsen.
The shuttle hurdle preliminaries are Thursday afternoon at Drake Stadium in Des Moines with the 400 meter dash final on Thursday night. On Friday afternoon are the 110 meter hurdles prelims and the 4×200 final. The Friday evening schedule features the 4×100 prelims. Relay finals, including the sprint medley, are scheduled for Saturday.
