Wolverines win one, lose one against West Sioux
The match-up between the golf teams from South O’Brien and West Sioux yielded a split. The Wolverine girls were victorious 195-267 but the boys fell to the Falcons 174-190 in War Eagle Conference action May 9 at Primghar Golf & Country Club. It was another perfect night for golf with warm temperatures and little wind. The girls improved to 6-2 and are in third place in the conference behind Hinton and Akron-Westfield. The boys’ record dipped to 2-7.
The South O’Brien Girls shot their best team score of the season, won the dual, and earned all four medals. “It’s great to see our team score trending downward as we move into the WEC Tournament and postseason play,” remarked South O’Brien coach Kris Faust. “We’re going to have to stay focused next week. We may be a young team, but the girls are serious and competitive.”
Junior Lindsey Einck earned medalist honors with a 46. Freshman Alli Griebel was hot and she shot a personal best 47 to earn runner-up honors. “Alli has been eager to break into the 40s, and tonight was her night,” said Faust. Freshman Cassidy Horstman faced some struggles, but managed to card a 50 for 3rd place. Anna Griebel rounded out the team score with a 52. “Anna has been our fourth card at almost every meet,” noted Faust. “Her score consistently helps our team score.” Freshman Addi Triplett stayed in the 50s for the second night in a row to earn 6th place. Freshman Addi Odenbrett shot a 61, which is a few strokes below her average, to place 7th.
Team Scores: South O’Brien 195, WS 267.
(Meet honors all from SO’) Medalist: Lindsey Einck 46, Runner-up: Alli Griebel 47, 3rd: Cassidy Hortsmann 50, 4th: Anna Griebel 52.
Other SO’ scores: Addi Triplett 58, Addi Odenbrett 61.
On the boys side, senior Jace Kleinwolterink carded a personal best 41 and took the runner-up medal. It was the only medal the Wolverines could sneak away with against a good Falcon team. “Jace continues to be a strong team leader who takes the game seriously,” stated Faust. Ryan Fuller, coming off a great night at Marcus, shot a 46 to take 5th. Junior Alex Griebel took 6th with a 47. Freshman Hunter Lange’s 56 rounded out the Wolverine cards. Their #4 golfer Nathan Harms was out due to injury. “We head to Willow Creek in Le Mars for the WEC Tournament and to make up a dual with HMS at the same time,” noted Faust. “The top of the WEC is loaded with great golfers who average in the high 30s and low 40s, so we need to play our absolute best golf to be competitive. We will match up with HMS pretty evenly, so it will be a heated rivalry.”
Team Scores: WS 174, South O’Brien 190.
Medalist: Charles Houlton (WS) 40, Runner-up: Jace Kleinwolterink (SO’) 41, 3rd: Karsen Schuller (WS) 42, 4th: Connor Bergsma (WS) 44.
