Wolverines edge MMCRU girls for first WEC win

South O’Brien picked up its first War Eagle Conference victory of the season January 14, slipping past MMCRU 57-54 at Paullina. The win snapped a seven game losing streak that began after the Wolverines had beaten MMCRU on December 10. South O’Brien improved to 1-4 in the conference.
The 57 points were the most scored by the Wolverines in a game since a 75-66 loss to Alta-Aurelia in the season opener. Providing the one-two scoring punch against the Royals were Reese Farquhar with 17 points and Lindsey Einck with 16. Farquhar’s night included a pair of three-point baskets while Einck went 8-for-8 at the free throw line. Cassidy Hortsmann drained a trio of treys and finished with 11 points. Abby Nelson added five points, Chloe Hustedt four, Addison Hedberg three and Abby Woodall one. Hustedt found enough of her open teammates to total five assists.
South O’Brien shot 37 percent from the floor with 18 field goals in 49 attempts. The home team attempted 22 shots from beyond the arc and made six. Einck’s success helped the Wolverines go 15-for-22 at the line. South O’Brien was guilty of 16 turnovers.
The winners’ 40 rebounds included 14 on the offensive glass. Farquhar collected a total of 10 caroms. Grabbing seven rebounds each were Einck, Hustedt and Woodall. Nelson swiped the ball from the Royals four times and Farquhar blocked three of their shots.
