Wolverines use big fifth inning to get win over GLR

By Coach Heather Struve
South O’Brien used a combination of hits, walks and an error to score six big runs in an 8-7 come from behind victory over George-Little Rock on Wednesday, May 29 in Paullina.
The first inning was scoreless and the second inning both teams put a pair of runs on the board to make it 2-2. The Mustangs scored three more times in the top of the third to go up 5-2 and tacked on one more run in the fifth to make it 6-2.
In the bottom of the fifth Reese Farquhar lead off with a single and stole second. Jinger Nieuwenhuis followed that with a single of her own and was replaced on the bases with courtesy runner Kelsee Warnke. Lindsey Einck walked to load the bases and was replaced by pinch runner Avery Halverson. Abby Nelson and Ashlynn Gunnerson both reached base on errors and Cassidy Horstmann drew a walk. Brooklyn Edwards had the big hit of the night, a two-run single to score the final two runs of the inning and make the score 8-6 in favor of the Wolverines. GLR pushed a run across in the seventh and had runners at first and second when the last batter grounded out to Farquhar at third.
Edwards started on the mound, but was replaced by Tawni Wulf after just 2-1/3 innings. Wulf did a fantastic job in relief and got the win! Edwards gave up seven hits and five runs (two earned), walked four and struck out two. Wulf gave up two hits and two runs (one earned), walked three and struck out three in 4-2/3 innings of play. She gave the batters a new look with a different windup and it proved beneficial tonight. She was very much in control. On the defensive side tonight we committed six errors, which is way too many. We did show some grit by coming back late in the game.
Edwards and Farquhar each had a pair of singles to lead our hitters. Edwards had two RBI’s and Farquhar scored a run. Nieuwenhuis recorded a hit, a run by her CR Warnke, and an RBI. Nelson had a single and scored twice. Einck had a hit as well. We are putting the ball in play on a more consistent basis, but now we need to get a bit more solid contact on each swing. We are not hitting with a ton of power. This was a great come from behind effort.
