South O’Brien at Westwood Wins Starts New Year

Traveling to Sloan just after the new year, the Wolverines had a full day of action for both boys and girls, beginning with JV competition. No information is provided for boys JV.
Boys Varsity showed a strong win for the Wolverines for this rescheduled game. The opened with a modest 4-point lead at the end of the first period and expanding that 4 more by halftime. The Wolverines took a 9-point to the locker room.
South O’Brien opened a wide lead in the third period outscoring their hosts by 14 points. But the Rebels didn’t give up easily. They outscored the Wolverines in the final quarter of play by 6. The game ended at 68-51.
Senior Jaden Kreber sunk an impressive 41 game points hitting 7 of 10 3-point attempts. Rebel Seniors Hayden Versch and Connor Freese each put up 14 points for his teams scoring leader.
Wolverine seniors Gabe Moermond, 7 points and Brady Riedemann, 5 points rounded out the Wolverine scoring leaders.
Kreber led the Wolverines in rebounds with 11, 2 blocked shots and 3 steals. Senior Brennan Billick took down 6 boards, 3 offensive. Moermond took down 4 boards with also 3 offensive grabs and 2 steals. The Rebels’ Versch grabbed 7 boards, a block and a steal. Senior Ryder Pepin also claimed 7 rebounds with 2 offensive and a steal. Seven rebounds was the Rebel number with junior Pazton Teel also taking down 7, with 2 offensive rebounds and a steal.
Boys Dominate at Home
There was no information available for JV. The Varsity boys dominated the visitng Harris-Lake park basketball team on Tuesday January 6. The game final sat at 60-25, even with host South O’Brien Wolverines scorein 0 in the third period.
Senior Jaden Kreber put in 19 points and 4 rebounds and a steal. Senior Brady Riedemann put in 11 points. Senior Gabe Moermond scored 9 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals. Senior Brennan Billick topped rebounding with 5 overall boards, 4 offensive.
H-LP Wolvers’ junior Karter Evans scored 10 with 5 rebounds including 1 offensive. Senior Mason Ahrenstorff scored 6 and 3 boards. Sophomore Beckett Rahe scored 5. Senior Coyer Robinson claimed 4 boards with 1 offensive.
Westwood Girls Gave No Quarter
The Wolverines had a rough start on January 2 at Westwood falling behind by 14 in the opening quarter. The Wolverines scored double digits in the second quarter but fell by another 8 points. Halftime score was 39-17.
Rebel scoring slowed in the second half. They outscored the Wolverines in the third period 6-13 and inched past them in the final 10-11. The game final was 62-33 for the host Rebels.
Senior Reese Farquhar led scoring with 8 points, 6 boards, 2 offensive a blocked shot and a steal. Junior Abby Woodall kept pace. She also scored 8 and boarded 6 with 1 offensive and 2 steals. Senior Addison Hedberg contributed 5 points. Lindsey Einck took down 4 boards. Half were second chance. She also had a block.
Rebel top scorer was senior Brenna Johsnon with 16. She also took down 6 boards along with teammate senior Hannah Krueger. Sophomore Carlee Johnston dropped in 13 points and senior Cate Drees contributed 12. Senior Grace Lewis rebounded 4.
SOS Hosted Harris-Lake Park
The Harris-Lake Park Wolves took control of the hardwood Tuesday January 6 in the South O’Brien Competition Gym. The opening quarter was close with a 13-14 score in favor of the visiting H-LP Wolves in an exciting first quarter that featured the host team having the lead often throughout opening play. The second period of play also favored the Wolver who outscored their hosts by 4, taking a 5-point lead to the locker room. The Wolverines closed the gap in the third quarter outscoring their guests 9-5 in the period. The teams entered the final time of contest just a point apart. That spread was consistent through about half of the final quarter when the Wolves opened up a few points but the never give up Wolverines closed the gap back up, briefly. But it wasn’t enough to overcome. The Wolverines took a loss, exciting as it was, at home 29-36.
Senior Lindsey Einck and junior Abby Woodall shared top scoring honors with 9 points each. Einck rebounded 10 with 3 second chances. Woodall grabbed 9 of her own. Senior Reese Farquhar scored 8 and boarded 8.
H-LP leaders were junior Peyton Reverts with 9 points. Juniors Cora Niemeier put in 8 points and Sydney Rahe contributed 7. Rahe also tookdown 5 rebounds with 3 offensive. She got 6 steals. Gracie Gunderson boarded 13 with an amazing 9 offenisive grabs, a blocked shot and 5 steals. Senior Lilli Gunderson took 7 boards with 2 offensive.
