Bison Burger Picnic
By Mari Radtke
It’s become a tradition. And it’s growing in attendance. For years, nobody knows for sure how many, Little Sioux Valley Conservation Association (LSVCA) has hosted a picnic on the grounds of the Prairie Heritage Center on the second Tuesday in August. The nature center, built in the early 2000s overlooks the Little Sioux River east of Sutherland and west of Peterson just off of Highway 10.
During the more than two decades of entertaining and educating the public about nature, history and conservation, features have increased to the center. There is an observation deck, kid attractions and down the hill is a path with interesting hands-on displays.
Inside the atrium features a diorama of a prairie before Europeans settled the area. A bison looms large in the diorama, just as it would while bison populated the area.
LSVCA raises funds to assist with programs at the center, held year round. Speakers are brought to share what is known about their specialty. Eagles are a popular topic.
A bison pen is adjacent to the Prairie Heritage Center grounds. Two new babies were born this year and a contest to name them will be held during the free will donation picnic of bison burger, chips watermelon and water.
Horse drawn carriage rides are planned for Tuesday August 12. Golf cart rides to the Waterman family cemetery. They are the first European settlers to O’Brien County. Live music is not too loud, but fills the air. It makes an enjoyable backdrop to the picnic atmosphere under the tents.
Bring a lawn chair, enjoy some food, take a few rides and enjoy.
