South O’Brien Can’t Make it Happen Against Knights

by Scott Chrisman
South O’Brien journeyed out of conference to take on Unity Christian June 19 at Orange City. The Knights scored two runs in four of their six innings to win 8-1. Due to a scheduling conflict the game was played at MOC/Floyd Valley’s new middle school diamond which is adjacent to their new elementary building.
“I just felt like we did not show up to play,” commented South O’Brien head coach Heather Struve. “Our defense had a couple routine plays that turned into errors and our offense looked like we were so tired that we couldn’t even swing a bat hard. Our pitching from Alli Griebel and Tawni Wulf was pretty good as they both kept it around the plate, only walked a couple and just made Unity put the ball in play. We only had three team hits, which is not nearly enough.”
Abby Nelson doubled to lead off the game. She scored on BreLee Rasmussen’s base hit. Ashlynn Gunnerson had the other hit for the Wolverines, a single.
Griebel got the pitching start and went four innings, yielding six runs on seven hits with a strikeout and two hit batters. Half of the runs were earned. Wulf’s two innings in the circle yielded two earned runs on three hits. She walked two batters and hit one.
