Wolverines labor through loss to West Sioux
The South O’Brien softball team was hospitable to a fault as it entertained West Sioux June 9 at Paullina. The Falcons came away with an 8-4 War Eagle Conference victory.
“We struggled in all phases of the game,” lamented South O’Brien head coach Heather Struve. “We committed four errors in the field, walked seven batters, while only striking out five and could only muster six hits off of the West Sioux pitcher. We just did not look mentally in the game. This was definitely a team we could beat and we just did not show up to play. West Sioux connected on eight hits and they were finding the gaps and bunching hits together. As poorly as we played, we were still only down 6-4 after six innings of play, but a couple runs by the Falcons in the top of the seventh kind of took the wind out of our sails.”
Griebel went the first five innings in the circle and took the loss. She yielded five runs (three earned) on eight hits with six walks and four strikeouts. Tawni Wulf took the final two innings and allowed three unearned runs on four hits with one strikeout and four walks.
At the plate Abby Nelson was 2-for-4 with a run scored. BreLee Rasmussen, Maeci Stevens, Griebel and Wulf each had one hit. Both Rasmussen and Abby Woodall drove in a run.
