Defense falters as Akron-Westfield runs past Wolverines
Akron-Westfield’s aggresive style of play paid dividends against South O’Brien. The Wolverines were guilty of numerous errors, giving the 14th-ranked Westerners ample opportunity to run the bases in their 17-9 War Eagle Conference win June 13 at Paullina. South O’Brien slipped to 1-4 in the conference and 5-7 on the season.
“Our two pitchers, Alli Griebel and Tawni Wulf, made A-W put it in play, but our defense just did not show up tonight, as we committed 12 errors in the field,” commented Wolverine head coach Heather Struve. “You just can’t do that against a team like A-W. They will eat you alive on the base paths. We did hit the ball well, combining for a total of 10 team hits. Maeci Stevens bombed a solo home run to left for our first home run of the year. We just can’t let good teams rush our play on defense.”
Ashlynn Gunnerson and Reese Farquhar had two hits apiece and Abby Woodall, BreLee Rasmussen and Stevens each drove in a pair of runs. The four stolen bases in four attempts were courtesy of Lindsey Einck, Kelsee Warnke, Kaylin Kreber and Avery Halverson.
Griebel pitched 6-1/3 innings, allowing 12 runs on 13 hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Just five of the runs were earned. Wulf’s 2/3 of an inning included five runs (three earned) on three hits with one walk.
