Friendship Bible Study Hosts Anniversary Program

by Mari Radtke
Jean Gnade took on the challenge with a few dedicated Friendship Bible Coffee devotees. The event, held Tuesday May 20 at Siloam Lutheran Church, an inaugural event for the refurbished and cherished landmark.
Jean has participated in the bible learning coffees for most of those 50 years. The organization began in Paullina by Jody Ver Ploeg after raising three children, a husband whose work took him away from home and finding herself in need of a way to productively fill her time. The story was told, Tuesday, about Jody’s prayers and a knock on her door and God’s answer. The weary traveler who had asked to sleep the night on the couch turned out to be an itinerate minister. He traveled and lived as the Bible tells us Jesus lived, spreading the Word. Sharing the Word through Friendship Bible coffees became Jody’s calling.
The groups of ladies’ bible studies grew from one to three and men’s and couples’ coffees added to the mix. Special needs were addressed such as providing child care for a parent to attend was common place.
On Tuesday, original participants joined to share their favorites stories of time with Friendship Bible studies. Some told stories of their individual receipt of Jesus.
Four cousins, a barber shop quartet-styled music performance by four cousins; Jeanne Hill, Sandy Brewer, Esther Koehlmoos and Sophie Merrigan. Three hymns were sung by all in attendance. Steve Berntson played the organ.
A luncheon was served following the stories of those who are fulfilled by their time with Friendship bible study.
