It was a great day for the South O’Brien Girls Golf Team as they placed 2nd at the War Eagle Conference Tournament on May 13 at Willow Creek in Le Mars. The girls ended the season with a WEC record of 15-3.
“Our girls wanted to make a name for themselves as a team today, and they sure did,” said Wolverine coach Kris Faust. “We may be a young, inexperienced team, with one junior and five freshmen, but the girls play with heart and a competitive mindset. They are coachable and always work to improve. I am excited to see what this team can accomplish in post-season play.”
Akron-Westfield won the team title with a combined 371 strokes. The Wolverines compiled a score of 384.
Three Wolverine golfers earned medals in the tournament. Freshman Cassidy Horstmann was 2nd with an 18-hole total of 88. She tied her 9-hole low with a 41 on the front nine played on the red course. Junior Lindsey Einck finished 5th with a 91 which was her 18-hole personal best. Freshman Alli Griebel placed 20th with a 102. She matched her 9-hole low by shooting 48 on the red course.
Freshman Anna Griebel missed the medals by one stroke with a 103, however, she shot a 9-hole personal best 51 on the red course. Freshman Addi Triplett shot a personal best with a 56 on the back nine played on the black course. Freshman Addi Odenbrett carded a 58 on the red course, which tied her 9-hole personal best.
Golfers earn WEC season honors based on the points they earn in meets throughout the season, including points earned in the WEC Tournament. After the points were tallied, three Wolverine golfers made all-conference. Lindsey Einck and Cassidy Horstmann earned 1st Team honors and Alli Griebel made the 2nd Team. “Lindsey, Cassidy, and Alli have been on the leaderboard consistently and are very deserving of WEC honors,” said Faust.
