Attempts by the South O’Brien girls track and field team to qualify events for the State meet came up short as the Wolverines competed in the Class 1A State Qualifying Meet held May 15 at Armstrong with North Union hosting. South O’Brien was unable to automatically qualify by finishing first in an event nor did their athletes record times or distances exceptional enough to gain at large entry into the State meet field.
The Wolverines scored a total of 49 points to finish sixth among the 14 teams at the Armstrong meet. At the top, Ft. Dodge St. Edmond collected 104 points to finish one point ahead of Newell-Fonda.
The top placing for South O’Brien was a runner-up finish by the shuttle hurdle relay quartet of Abby Nelson, Maeci Stevens, Chloe Hustedt and Tori Schueller. Finishing third were Tawni Wulf in the discus and Camryn Strubbe in both the long jump and 100 meter dash. Schueller placed furth in the high jump while fifth place went to Hustedt in the 400 meter hurdles and Strubbe in the 200 meter dash.
