Visiting The Past, Envisioning The Future

Schools are a place where relationships are made, filled with memories of glory, joy and sadness. A school, especially in rural Iowa is central to community. Even though they are “just a building” they are special.
Progress, however, sometimes forces difficult decisions. South O’Brien has just made that difficult decision for its 1925 building in Paullina. As progress sweeps across the district with many building projects and upgrades in an effort to provide currently necessary education with modern tools, such as computers, sometimes it becomes impossible to bring along history.
Such is the case for the 1925 Paullina building. It has stood and served for 100 years. And soon, its service will have fulfilled its useful life.
“Before we turn the page to an exciting new chapter, we’re opening the doors of the 1925 Paullina building to celebrate the stories, memories, and milestones that made this building special,” said a longtime teacher of South O’Brien wishing to remain anonymous.
Self guided tours are available, allowing past students, teachers and new to the district as well so the past can be honored and look forward to the future. “We welcome you to walk the halls, share memories, and be part of the sendoff. Whether you studied here, worked here, or just passed by every day — this space is part of our shared story. Let’s give it the farewell it deserves. #WolverineWay.
The building will be open Saturdays May 31 and June 7, 2025 from 8:00am to 10:00am. An online auction will take place at a date to be announced. Zomer Auction Company is conducting the sale.
