Five of South O’Brien’s boys entries in the War Eagle Conference Meet earned the distinction of being WEC champions at the event held May 5 at Hawarden and hosted by West Sioux.
The winners ranged from sprinters to hurdlers to even a long distance runner. Caden Wittrock, Brody Van Beek and Derek Paulsen made up three quarters of the champion 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams. Leading off on the 4×100 was Damian Villarreal while Brett Evans left from the starting blocks in the 4×200. Meanwhile, Landen Davenport captured the 3200 meter run.
Brennan Billick won the 110 meter hurdles event and teamed with Paulsen, Evans and Van Beek in the shuttle hurdle relay. That relay not only finished first but also set a new meet record with a time of 1:00.33. The previous record of 1:00.51 had been set by Unity Christian in 2009.
Winning the WEC team championship was Gehlen Catholic with a total of 131 points. Hinton was second with 123.5 points, MMCRU third with 122 and South O’Brien fourth with 91.5.
Also for South O’Brien, Paulsen was second in the 100 meters, Trayton Cobb third in the 1600, Gabe Moermond fourth in the 400 and Evans fourth in the 400 meter hurdles. Relays placing fourth were the 4×800 of Corbin Warnke, Noah Wittrock, Karson Wetrich and Ethan Schwarz, the sprint medley of Villarreal, Caden Wittrock, Moermond and Cobb and the distance medley of Kaden Tjossem, Jaden Kreber, Warnke and Cobb.
