Wolverines come away with a win and a loss against HLP

South O’Brien dueled Harris-Lake Park April 22 at Lake Park’s Silver Lake Country Club and came away with a split in War Eagle Conference action. The girls won 205-221 and the boys fell to a locked in Wolves squad 158-189. “It was a perfect night for golf, but some of our golfers made it harder than it had to be,” remarked South O’Brien coach Kris Faust. “We duffed and sprayed some balls off the tee, played in the wrong fairways, battled the trees, and struggled reading greens. Even so, we walked away with a win on the girls’ side, four of the eight medals on the night, and several personal bests. I was proud of the way our golfers managed the adversity to bring in respectable scores.”
The SO’ girls remain undefeated on the season after beating HLP and taking three of the four medals. Junior Lindsey Einck earned medalist honors with a 49. Freshman Cassidy Horstmann took runner-up with a 51. Freshman Alli Griebel, with a 52, tied for 3rd but landed in 4th after a handicap hole card playoff. “Lindsey, Cassidy, and Alli continue to outplay the competition just enough to earn medals,” said Faust. Freshman Anna Griebel, who was just one stroke out of medal contention with a 53, helped the team get the win. Freshman Addi Odenbrett hit a season low 58, and freshman Addi Triplett tied her season low 60.

The South O’Brien boys faced a tough HLP team, who shot their best team score of the season. HLP took the top three medals, but senior Jace Kleinwolterink, shooting a career-best 42, snuck in to take the 4th-place medal. Kleinwolterink tied for 3rd but lost in a handicap hole card playoff. “Jace found a way to turn it on tonight,” commented Faust. “It was great to see him fight through a couple of bad shots to card a 42. Alex Griebel, with a 47, continues to stay at the top of the leaderboard for the Wolverines as well.” Seniors Ryan Fuller with a 49 and Reese Lundquist with a 51 (a personal best) rounded out the South O’Brien team scores tonight.
