Sheldon/South O’Brien trio wrestle at State Tournament
Sheldon/South O’Brien sent three wrestlers to Des Moines last week to compete in the State Wrestling Tournament held February 19-22 at Wells Fargo Arena. Josh Hoffmann, Mitchel Fischer and Kolt Roos were all unable to earn place finishes in Class 2A.
Hoffmann lost a narrow 9-7 decision to Algona’s CJ McGregor in his 132-pound opening round match. In round two of the consolations, the Sheldon senior took on Cain Rodgers of North Fayette Valley and lost 18-3 by technical fall in 4:23. Rodgers went on to take eighth place. Hoffmann finished the season with a record of 33-12.
Fischer got a win in his first round match at 165 pounds, claiming an 8-0 major decision over Ryland Morgan of Clarion-Goldfield-Dows. In championship round two, the Sheldon junior suffered a 19-3 technical fall loss to Ballard’s Tucker Vitzthum in 3:09. Vitzthum made it all the way to the championship match where he lost to Bo Koedam of Sergeant Bluff-Luton. Moving into the consolations, Fischer pinned Webster City’s Luke Estlund in 3:08. His tournament came to an end in round three of the consolations with a slender 7-6 loss to Blake Johnson of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont. Fischer compiled a season record of 36-11.
Wrestling at 175 pounds, Roos lost his opening match by fall to Anamosa’s Ayden Antonelli in 2:50. In the consolations, the Sheldon junior’s season ended at 29-16 with a loss by fall to Crestwood’s Brock Voyna in 2:51.
