Three wrestlers from Sheldon/South O’Brien will be competing this week in Des Moines. Josh Hoffmann, Mitchel Fischer and Kolt Roos earned the trip with their performances at the Class 2A District 3 Wrestling Tournament held February 15 at Bishop Heelan high school in Sioux City. Wrestlers who finished either first or second at Districts advanced to the State Tournament which is being held February 19-22 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. The action in Class 2A is slated to begin Wednesday evening.
At the District Tourney, Hoffmann captured first place at 132 pounds. He pinned his quarterfinal opponent, Jed Wulf of OABCIG, in 1:12 and followed that up with an 18-2 technical fall win over Heelan’s Alex Amaro in the semifinal. The Sheldon senior won the 1st Place Match with a 19-1 technical fall victory over Wyatt Johnson of Cherokee. This is Hoffmann’s third trip to State. He competed as a freshman and again last season.
Fischer and Roos are first-time state qualifiers.
Wrestling at 165 pounds, Fischer won his semifinal match by fall over Tru Timmerman of Cherokee in 5:27 but lost by fall in the first place match to Sergeant Bluff-Luton’s Bo Koedam in 3:11. No wrestleback for second was warranted so second place was secure for the Sheldon junior.
Roos also placed second. In his semifinal at 175 pounds he won 8-6 in the ultimate tie breaker over Carroll’s Kieran Polking. The junior from Sheldon lost the first place match by fall to Zayvion Ellington of Sergeant Bluff-Luton in 38 seconds. As was the case with Fischer, no wrestleback was required to decide second place.
There were a couple of near misses when it came to qualifying for State. Derek Kruger won his third place match at 157 pounds but did not have the opportunity to wrestle back for second place. Landon Sietstra wrestled for first place at 215 pounds but lost the match. He then was involved in a wrestleback match for second place but lost that as well.
The Orabs totaled 113 points to place fourth as a team. Sergeant Bluff-Luton was the team champion. The Warriors finished with 226 points.
