Second-half comback caries Gehlen past Wolverine girls
It was a game of two distinct halves when South O’Brien hosted Gehlen Catholic February 7 at Paullina. The Wolverines scored 18 first-quarter points and led 26-16 at halftime. Gehlen came back with 19 points in the third quarter to lead by one going into the fourth and eventually won the War Eagle Conference game 46-43. With the loss South O’Brien finishes ninth in the conference with a record of 1-8.
Reese Farquhar scored 20 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to record game highs in both categories Cassidy Horstmann tallied seven points, Chloe Hustedt five, Abby Nelson and BreLee Rasmussen four each, Lindsey Einck two and Abby Woodall one. Farquhar and Hustedt each assisted on three baskets.
South O’Brien was 14-of-44 from the field to shoot 32 percent. The Jays finished at 35 percent shooting (18-of-52) including 5-of-21 from behind the three-point line. The Wolverines also launched 21 shots from distance, making six. From the free throw line South O’Brien went 9-for-18 and the Jays 5-for-15. The balanced Gehlen attack was led by Rysaiah Sitzmann and her 11 points.
Rasmussen snatched six rebounds and Einck four. Nelson, Horstmann and Addison Hedberg each came away with a pair of steals and Farquhar blocked a shot. The turnoverer totals showed the Wolverines with 16 and Gehlen with 12.
