Treys are wild as Wolverine boys beat West Sioux
A 14-6 advantage for South O’Brien supplied most of the margin the team would need as the Wolverines defeated West Sioux 62-51 January 17 at Hawarden. With the win, South O’Brien improved to 4-2 in the War Eagle Conference and 9-3 on the season. The Falcons dipped to 3-10 overall.
Caden Wittrock nailed six three-pointers and finished with a game-high 19 points. Gabe Moermond hit four treys and scored 14 points. Jaden Kreber added 10 points, Brody Van Beek nine, Brett Evans five, Brady Riedemann three and Reese Lundquist two. The leading scorers for West Sioux were Eli McMillan and Jayden Kots, both with 14 points, and Kolton Koopmans with nine. No other stats were available for the Falcons.
The Wolverines were 12-of-56 from the floor for 38 percent. They made 14 threes in all, coming on 33 attempts. South O’Brien was 6-of-12 at the foul line. The Wolverines’ 1.36 assists-to-turnover ratio was the result of 15 assists and 11 turnovers. Moermond dished for five assists and Van Beek four.
The 34 South O’Brien rebounds included eight from Lundquist, six from both Wittrock and Evans and five from Riedemann. Wittrock came away with two steals of the team’s five steals and Van Beek blocked a shot.
This win was the 400th career victory for South O’Brien head coach Kiley Yates. In his 27 years of coaching, 19 of which have been at South O’Brien, Yates has averaged nearly 15 wins per season.
