Obituary – Darrell Lee Bruns

Darrell Lee Bruns

Darrell Lee Bruns, 55, of California was killed in a tragic auto accident on Sunday, July 27, 2024 near Acton, CA.
Darrell was born on September 30, 1968 in Cherokee, Iowa to Charles Jr and Evelyn (Harms) Bruns. Darrell graduated from Primghar High School in 1987 and received a degree in Electronic Communications in 1988 from Western Iowa Tech in Sioux City, Iowa. He achieved the General Radiotelephone Operator License, the Associate Certified Electronics Technician License (ACET) and the International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians License (ISCET). Darrell’s first job was with Iowa Office Supply in Storm Lake, Iowa for 5 yrs. Shortly after starting this job, Darrell married Leann Dirks on March 11, 1989. They made their home in Fonda, Iowa where their first son, Tyler was born in 1992. In 1993 they moved to Pocahontas, Iowa where their second son, Zachary, was born in 1994. They later divorced in 2001. During that time, along with his full-time job, he worked as a part time bartender on weekends at Le Chateau in Pocahontas, Iowa and started his own repair business, Bruns Office Machine Repair. His next job was with Pocahontas Office Supply in Pocahontas, Iowa for a couple of years. Darrell found his lifelong passion when he went to work for his then father-in-law with Marv Dirks Construction of Fonda, Iowa. After several years they joined forces to become D & B Construction. In 2004 he married Terra Simon and in 2005 he left this job and they moved to California. This marriage ended in 2016. From then his domestic partner was Shaunna White until 2022 when they parted ways. Everywhere he lived he continued his Bruns Construction business making many friends, clients and business associates along the way in several different areas of CA until his death. July 24, 2022, Darrell married Cheryol DeVorre but divorced 2 months later.
Darrell is survived by his two sons, Tyler (Kailey) Bruns and Zachary (Brittany) Bruns of Pocahontas, Iowa; five granddaughters, Aubrie, Abigail, Braelyn, Chloe, and Cassidy; his parents, Charles Jr and Evelyn Bruns of Spencer, Iowa; his two sisters, Dianne (Marvin Jr) Dirks of Fonda, Iowa and Darlene (Mike) Carlson of Spencer, Iowa and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Darrell was preceded in death by his infant grandson, Beckett Bruns in 2021; his brother, Dale Bruns in 2011; and his grandparents, Henry & Gertie Harms and Charles Sr and Lena Bruns.
A Visitation/Memorial will be held on Sunday, October 6, 2024, from 3:00 – 5:00 PM at Powers Funeral Home in Pocahontas, Iowa. Any stories or memories can be shared beginning at 4:30 PM.
