Wolverines down West Sioux in eight-inning contest
South O’Brien came up with four runs in the eighth inning to beat West Sioux 9-5 June 3 at Hawarden. The Falcons had extended the War Eagle Conference baseball game by scoring three times in the bottom of the seventh.
The Wolverines struck first with single runs in the second and third innings. West Sioux tallied once in the fourth. A three-run sixth staked South O’Brien to a 5-1 lead before the Falcons forced the extra inning with a run in the sixth and then the three-spot in the seventh.
Damian Villarreal delivered a double and two RBI’s. Ben Woodall was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Gabe Moermond contributed a hit, an RBI and a run scored while Ryan Fuller had a hit and a run scored.
Brett Evans drew four walks, one of which forced in a run, and he scored twice. Jaden Kreber also scored two runs. Brody Van Beek walked, was hit by a pitch, scored a run and picked up an RBI. Brady Riedemann also scored a run.
Starting pitcher Woodall went 6-2/3 innings, allowing the five runs on eight hits. Four of the runs were earned. The senior struck out eight batters, hit five and walked two. Moermond worked the final inning-and-a-third in relief to pick up the win. He struck out two of the five batters he faced and yielded one hit. South O’Brien committed one error in the field.
