Mustangs go deep to defeat South O’Brien

George-Little Rock blasted four home runs to outscore South O’Brien 16-9 in War Eagle Conference baseball action May 29 at Paullina. The long balls came from four different Mustang batters: Micah Jumbeck, Jack Krull and Drew and Michael Denekas.
After George-Little Rock took an early 2-0 lead, the Wolverines answered with six runs in the bottom of the first. The Mustangs got a run back in the third and then expoded for nine more in the fourth. One run by South O’Brien in the sixth was followed by an additional four from the visitors in the seventh. The Wolverines tallied once in the ninth.
South O’Brien batters notched six hits and drew eight bases-on-balls. Brady Riedemann went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Ben Woodall doubled, walked and scored two runs. Brett Evans had an RBI single and later scored.
Damian Villarreal and Jaden Kreber each singled and scored. Mitchell Enger walked, scored and picked up an RBI. Gabe Moermond walked, was hit by a pitch and scored twice. Ryan Fuller drew two walks and scored a run. Stealing one base apiece were Woodall, Enger, Fuller, Riedemann and Kreber.
Moermond drew starting pitching duty and went three plus innings. He gave up nine runs on five hits with eight strikeouts, four walks and two hit batters. Eight of the runs were earned. Fuller took over in relief and yielded seven runs (three earned) on five hits. His 3-2/3 inning stint included five strikeouts, five walks and a hit batter. Brody Van Beek came on to get the final out, which came by way of a strikeout. There were two Wolverine errors.
