South O’Brien picks up close Conference victory
By Coach Heather Struve
The South O’Brien girls played an awesome game of error free defense and pitcher Brooklyn Edwards went the distance to earn a 1-0 War Eagle Conference win over MMCRU! The victory May 24 at Marcus allowed the Wolverines to even their conference record at 1-1 and their early-season mark at 2-2.
Every player in the field was in on at least two plays on defense, whether it was an assist or put out. Tawni Wulf had a pair of assists from right field to first base on line drives. Addison Hedberg had a great catch in deep center and Reese Farquhar snagged a hard line drive at third to save some hits by the Royals. It was a great team effort
Edwards had a super night on the mound even though it was a very tight strike zone. She struck out three, walked five and gave up only one hit.
On the offensive side, Edwards had an RBI double to score the lone run. Abby Woodall hit a single and scored on Edwards’ double out of the nine hole. Ashlynn Gunnerson hit a double and Jinger Nieuwenhuis had a single. As a team we left 12 runners on base, including five on third base. We need to be more confident at the plate, especially with runners in scoring position. And we need to hit the ball with more power and not stop our swings when contact is made. Hopefully that will come as the season goes on. Overall we played with a lot of focus and determination tonight. I was very pleased with our effort.
